The climate of the Southeast is uniquely warm and wet, with mild winters and high humidity, compared to the rest of the United States.

Bodies of Water
There are 4 major bodies of water in the Southeast Region:
Ohio River
The Ohio River runs about 980 miles long. It is the largest tributary by volume to the Mississippi River in the United Sates. Starting at the confluence of the Allegheny and the Monongahela Rivers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and ending in Cairo, Illinois, where it flows into the Mississippi River |
Tennessee River
The Tennessee River is the largest tributary to the Ohio River. It is about 650 miles. The Tennessee River runs from the east side of Knoxville, Tennessee running eastward to Chattanooga. It was popularly known as the Cherokee River among other names. |
Mississippi River
The Mississippi River is the largest drainage system in North America. It ends in in the Gulf of Mexico, which is near Florida. It slowly flows southwards for about 2,530 miles. It runs all the way through the USA. It is the 4th longest and 10th largest river in the world. |
Arkansas River
The Arkansas River is about 1,470 miles. It is the 6th largest river in the United States, it is the 45th largest river in the world. The Arkansas River runs through the Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. |
Landforms
The Everglades
The Everglades is about 735 square miles and every inch is covered in marshes and wetlands. It is in the southern portion of Florida. The Everglades was shaped by fire and water. The Everglades experienced major floods in the wet season and fatal droughts in the dry season. |
The Ozark Mountains
The Ozark Mountains covers 47,000 square miles. It covers most of the southern half of Missouri and also is extended to northern central Arkansas. The Ozark Mountains are also part of southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma. |
The Appalachian Mountains
The Appalachian mountains cover 737,000 square miles. The Appalachians start in the northern region of Georgia and passes through 10 states including Georgia. The other states that the Appalachian Mountains pass through are: Tennessee, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. |
